The goal and purpose of this class is to enhance the student’s musicianship through choral music.The class will focus on performing fine choral literature, learning proper vocal technique, learning musical theory concepts as well as the history of music.Students will improvise and compose using standard compositional techniques.Students will also evaluate vocal performance and practice proper performance and audience behavior.Students will relate music to history and culture, to the arts, and to other “core” disciplines.Throughout the semester, aspects of the AlabamaHigh School Graduation Exam will be covered in class.This class fulfills the fine arts credit for graduation.

·BE ON TIME: Be in your seat and ready for class BEFORE the bell rings or you are considered tardy.
·BE PREPARED: Bring the necessary materials (paper, pencils, etc…) to class everyday.
·BE RESPECTFUL: Behave appropriately towards your classmates and teacher (including substitute). What is considered “appropriate?”
Discipline Procedures for Off-Task Behavior
1st Minor Offense: Loss of daily points.
2nd Offense: Morning Detention 7:
If you miss detention, you will be written up.
Tardiness to detention will result in another morning detention.
3rd Offense or Major Offense: Referral to Administration.
Repeated Offenses will result in dismissal from the Sparkman Choral Department.
Class Procedures and Expectations for all Choral Members
Failure to comply with the below procedures and expectations may lead to suspension from future choral activities and possible dismissal from the Sparkman Choral Department.
Students should respect fellow choral students as well as the director, including substitute teachers.Disrespect will not be tolerated.
Food, gum and drinks (with the exception of water) should be put in the trash upon entering class.These items are not allowed in the choral room.
Students should be prepared everyday by having pencils to write in their music as well as having an organized notebook with syllabus, music, and paper.
Students are expected to actively participate in every class rehearsal. This includes but is not limited to board work within the first 5-7 minutes of class, sight reading, taking notes, warm-ups and rehearsal of the choral literature. If the student is ill and not able to sing, he or she is still responsible for participating and following along in the music without singing.Sick does not equal a study hall.
·If you are absent, it is up to YOU to find out what you missed in class.You will be expected to make up any missed assignments or tests the day you return.If you are out for more than 3 days, we will discuss dates for the make-up work.
In accordance with school policy, all tardy students will report directly to AAP and all rules in the school handbook will be strictly enforced.
Grades and School Conduct
·As a member of an extra-curricular group, you are responsible for maintaining passing grades.If a choir member fails a class, the director has the right move you to a Mixed or Intermediate Choir the following semester and you will not be allowed to attend field trips.
As a member of the Sparkman Concert Choir, members are expected to conduct themselves appropriately inside and outside of school. Suspensions, repeated AAP or discipline referrals are grounds for dismissal from the Sparkman Choral Department.
Concert Performances and Rehearsals
The choir will perform several times throughout the semester and all after-school rehearsals and performances are mandatory.
If a student is absent from a performance with prior approval from the director, he/she may complete a make up assignment to recover lost points.In the event of an unexcused absence from a concert, whether the teacher knows in advance or not, the student will receive a zero.
Students are not allowed to loiter on the SHS campus after a rehearsal. If a student does not drive, their ride should be on time to pick them up.The director or MCBOE is not responsible for any student left after the rehearsal end time.
There is a course fee of $20 per semester for this class.This fee goes towards the purchase of music and other music materials the students will need throughout the semester. This is due within the first few weeks of each semester.
When performing, the overall look of a choir leaves a big impression on the audience as well as the performers.The Sparkman Choral Department requires the ladies to purchase a dress and jewelry at the price of $75.They are to wear dark hose and black closed-toe shoes with their dress.The guys will need to purchase a full tuxedo for $140.They will need black socks and black dress shoes to wear with their tux.

High school students are getting ready to enter the working world and college.It is important that they have the necessary skills to make it in the outside world.Students will be expected to incorporate basic life skills in the choral room.They are to be prepared, be on time and lastly be respectful.These are all aspects that they must have to be successful during and after high school.
Each week, the students will have the opportunity to earn 50 participation points for doing exactly what is expected of them in the rehearsals. (10 pts per day)If they fail to follow the basic skills in class, they will lose their 10 points for the day.The behavior will be recorded and the student will sign, verifying the behavior and acceptance of the consequence. (see Discipline Procedures for Off-Task Behavior)
Students may earn extra credit by attending a local classical concert.The teacher must approve the concert, in advance.They will be required to critique the concert by using information learned in this class.A typed paper, one page in length, 12-pt font, must be turned in along with a ticket stub and concert program to receive credit.This will be worth a test grade.Only one concert extra credit per 9 weeks is allowed.If the student does not follow the above directions then credit will not be given.Credit will not be given if the paper is plagiarized.
Throughout the semester there will be several fundraisers.Fundraising is encouraged since our program requires funds for local field trips, registration fees, accompanists, purchase of materials for the classroom and any other items that we may need throughout the semester.
